Learn to Draw Ai Haibara from Detective Conan in 9 Easy Steps

So if you are a sucker for series, mangas and movies based in iconic characters from manga culture, then it is most likely that you have come across the Detective Conan series, a series which one of its main characters is Ai Haibara, also known as Shiho Miyano.

In this tutorial, we would be focusing on him and drawing Ai Haibara in all her glory. This would be done in 9 easy steps. The better acquainted you are with each step, the more realistic your drawing will be. To get things started, we would first draw a dummy that would serve as a base for our final sketch. Having said that, let’s get drawing.

Let´s begin with the tutorial:

STEP 1: DRAWING THE TORSO

Using the above image as a guide, the torso of our character would be drawn using two curved horizontal lines and two curved vertical lines that connect together. His torso would also be drawn using the 3/4 drawing scale. This means that the right side which faces the audience should be bigger than the left side. Furthermore, it should then be divided by two horizontal lines. The first highlights the collar bone region and the second highlights the chest region. Next up, draw a vertical line from the top of the torso to the end. Having drawn that, we would go on to create a base for the head and the arms by drawing a circle at the top of the torso and at the upper right part of the torso respectively. With that done, we can go on to draw the abdomen and hips.

We would draw the abdomen and hips by connecting two curved vertical lines.

STEP 2: DRAWING THE PELVIC AREA AND LEGS

Ai pelvic area would be drawn as simple female underwear. She will be standing on her feet with her left foot placed in a 3/4 view and the right leg looking frontally. Each leg should be started off as a big tube and should get smaller as your drawing gets to the knees. At the knees, it should expand out slightly and gradually reduce as it approaches the ankle. Having drawn that, go on to draw the feet as seen.

STEP 3: DRAWING THE ARMS

Our character’s right arm should be drawn bigger than his left arm because of the 3/4 drawing scale. Going on, when drawing the arms, start them off as two tubes connecting the torso with the elbow. Another tube should then extend out slightly and gradually reduce as your drawing approaches the wrist. Then draw the hands, both should be placed on top of the hips.

The right hand will be drawn as a square with the fingers open. The left hand fingers will be drawn on top of the left hip.

STEP 4: DRAWING THE HEAD

From the base created for our character’s head, draw an oval shape. The head will be almost a third of the full size of the body.

Next up, draw a vertical and a horizontal line within the head. These would be useful for drawing the facial details later. With that drawn, we would now focus on drawing the final lines.

STEP 5: DRAWING THE HAIR

Hair will be drawn on top of our´s character dummy´s head. So you should remove the upper part of our previous head drawing. Try to follow the shape you can see in the image above and don’t forget to draw several spiky tufts of hair covering the forehead.

STEP 6: DRAWING THE CLOTHING

Regarding the clothing aspect, we will proceed the same way we did with the hair. You gotta draw the tank top t-shirt, the short cargo pants, and the sandals on top of our dummy. After doing this, erase the underlying body parts covered by the clothing on top.

STEP 7: DRAWING THE FINAL LINE ART

At this point, we would fade out our dummy slightly and would use the traces left to draw our final sketch. This is because we don’t want the dummy to interfere with the flow of our final lines. So refer to the image above and draw your final sketch. To make it easier, take it body part by body part.

STEP 8: PAINTING THE BASE COLORS

Here’s where our drawing takes on color and begins to look vibrant. So roll up your sleeves grab the colors as seen in the above picture and get painting.

STEP 9: PAINTING THE SHADOWS AND LIGHTS

The shadows are essentially areas of our character not hit by light rays. Such as the neck, the armpit, and the interior of the short pants. So using the picture as a guide, pull out your darker complementary colors or chromatic black and paint on your drawing dark areas as seen in the above image.

At this point, you should have with you a commendable work of art. It is however advised that you repeat the tutorial a couple of times over in order to perfect your skills.
